Tourist Deglutition is a conceptualised performative and gastronomic action that activates and reinterprets photographs from the 10th anniversary of the Meliá Group’s Hotel Bahia Palace, held in the Planas Archive, depicting a celebration and an extra-large cake in the shape of a hotel. This is a post-situationist project featuring Santi Taura, Marc Caellas, Esteban Feune de Colombí and Maia Planas. Three actors, an opera singer, a chef and a group of guests come together for an ephemeral and private gathering, at which a menu is served that reflects on the consequences of the arrival of mass tourism and globalised touristification through gastronomy. The performance explores the relationship between iconophagy, tourism and anthropophagy. The invited guest has the opportunity to witness a strange, unusual and enigmatic spectacle in which they themselves provide the final meaning through their active participation. The gastronomic event functions as a metaphor for how we digest our history and our present, linked to the monoculture of tourism, within a space for open, responsible and sustainable knowledge exchange.
